How Columbia Basin Wind Damages Garage Doors

What Wind Actually Does to a Garage Door

A standard residential garage door panel is designed to handle the weight of the door itself and the mechanical forces of the spring and opener system. It is not designed to handle significant lateral wind loading — pressure applied horizontally against the face of the door panel. When wind pushes against an open or partially-open door panel, it creates a bending force across the width of the panel that the panel's steel skin and internal stiffeners are not designed to resist.

The result: the panel flexes in the middle, bowing out from the frame. If the flex is significant enough, rollers at the edges of the panel are pulled inward — out of the track. Once a roller leaves the track, the door becomes unguided on that side and cannot operate normally. The opener, if it continues to run, pulls against the misaligned door and can bend track sections, damage hinges, or strain the opener motor before the safety reversal feature activates.

The Center Strut Problem

The permanent fix for wind-related off-track failures is a horizontal center strut — a steel angle bracket that runs across the full width of the middle door panel, attached at both vertical track rails. The strut prevents the panel from bowing under lateral load by providing a rigid connection point at mid-panel. Doors with center struts can resist wind loading that would flex and derail an identical door without struts.

Here is the problem: many residential garage doors installed in the Tri-Cities — particularly older installations and some builder-grade installations from the 1990s and 2000s — don't have center struts. They were specified and installed to residential standards that work fine in sheltered markets but are inadequate for the Columbia Basin wind environment. Homeowners discover this when their door goes off track in a windstorm.

The fix is adding a center strut during the off-track repair visit. It's not expensive — typically priced after on-site assessment

Which Tri-Cities Locations See the Most Wind Damage

Wind exposure varies significantly across the Tri-Cities. The highest-exposure locations based on our service call patterns:

Finley and Southeast Kennewick: The Columbia River corridor southeast of Kennewick channels prevailing easterly winds from the Columbia Basin directly at homes in this area. Off-track calls from Finley are disproportionately high relative to the population.

West Pasco along Road 68: The agricultural flatlands west of Pasco provide minimal wind shelter. Homes along Road 68 and the Broadmoor corridor face wind from the west and northwest with no terrain break.

Southridge in Kennewick: The south hill position catches wind from the southwest. Homes with south or west-facing garages on Southridge are higher risk for wind-related door damage.

Horn Rapids in Richland: The proximity to the Columbia River creates wind channeling similar to the Finley corridor.

What to Do When Wind Knocks Your Door Off Track

Stop operating the door immediately — with or without the opener. A door that has jumped its tracks can fall if the opener continues to pull against it. The door is unguided on one or both sides and is not structurally supported as designed.

Call for service. Off-track repair is generally a same-day job. We realign the door, replace bent rollers, check and straighten any bent track sections, add a center strut if the door doesn't have one, and test the full system before leaving. Most off-track repairs are completed in 1–2 hours.

If this is the second or third time your door has gone off track in wind, the center strut addition is the conversation to have. Realigning the door without adding the strut solves the immediate problem; it does not solve the structural vulnerability that created it.
